AN EXHIBITION
Juliette Steiner
Cie Quai n°7
Seven people are gathered in a contemporary art gallery. All of them have a link - familial, friendly, professional - with Julia Armutt, a visual artist who died two years earlier, without ever having seen her work recognized by her peers. The companion of a famous sculptor, she had suffered all her life from her position as a "woman's woman". Knowing that her death was imminent, Julia created one last work, which would take the form of a montage for her posthumous exhibition. Believing they have come to the gallery for a vernissage, it is in fact to take charge of this montage that the artist's loved ones have gathered. They have a week, a set of rules and a batch of numbered crates to put together what turns out to be a retrospective of Julia's work, and one that will require their unexpected involvement. At the same time as revealing her works in all their diversity and triggering memories and testimonials, the montage of this exhibition, at once realistic and dreamlike, will reveal many aspects of Julia's life that have remained in the shadows, but above all will expose those closest to her far more than they could have imagined. Julia Armutt's last work, this collective fabrication becomes a requiem for a remarkable, complex and wildly free woman. Through the collaborative, hybrid writing that characterizes the work of the Quai n°7 company, Juliette Steiner and the creators around her expose the injustice of the spoliation and invisibilization of women in the history of art.
Founded in 2016 in Strasbourg, the Quai n°7 company is directed by Juliette Steiner. She trained at Strasbourg's Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) and at the Colmar Conservatory, and pursued her career at the crossroads of acting, visual arts, music and stage design. As a stage director, she champions a cooperative creative process that blends the different vocabularies of her collaborators. The company's language is characterized by the live manipulation of technical scenographic and visual elements by all, and writing on the stage. With regard to the creation ofAn ExhibitionJuliette Steiner will create for 2025 Oubliées (Oops I did it again)a conference in the form of a DJ set questioning the erasure of women in history. Associate artist at the Comédie de Colmar from 2019 to 2022 and supported since 2021 by La Filature in Mulhouse, she is now part of the committee of artists accompanying Kaori Ito's first term at the TJP.
